One thing I drastically underestimated about the trails I tackled at Red Rock Canyon was how challenging they could get. I’m about as casual as they come, occasionally taking a fun nature walk with the pup or kids. Let me just say, in no world am I anything but an amateur hiker. Hiking Trails at Red Rock Canyon That I Explored It’s the kind of place that reminds you how small you are in the grand scheme of things. Wanting to beat the crowds, I arrived promptly at 8 am and was immediately taken aback by the size and expansiveness of the space. My receipt had a QR code which was scanned by an employee upon entering the park. The cost for a car is $15, which I prepaid. I reserved my 8:00 am entry time on Red Rock Canyon’s visitor website about a week in advance. Within the conservation area is a 13-mile, 1-way scenic drive that has numerous hiking trails along the route, each with its own restrooms and parking lot. In these new flexible office, meeting, and work spaces, natural light is brought into the existing window-less space with the addition of overhead light monitors. The existing visitor center facility, constructed in 1982, was renovated to house administration for the National Conservation Area. A transpired solar wall system provides heating for the rest rooms, allowing the mechanical system in these spaces to be eliminated. High-efficiency mechanical systems were specified, while daylighting, solar water heating, and a 55 kW photovoltaic array convert the region’s intense sun into free energy. The Arrival building is sheltered by a “big hat” (a roof with ample overhangs) that creates an intermediate thermal transition zone and harvests rainwater used for interpretive exhibits and landscape irrigation. Many resource conserving ideas are incorporated into the LEED Gold project. In support of the Bureau of Land Management’s mission to encourage stewardship for the land, the primarily outdoor experience instills in individuals a sense of personal responsibility for their environment’s well-being. The design significantly reduces the amount of indoor, conditioned space by creating exterior, tempered microclimates for the majority of the exhibit pavilions. The educational content of the exhibits and of the building are inseparable as both introduce visitors to water harvesting, greywater irrigation, climate specific architecture, and the use of shade, humidity, and air movement to temper outdoor space. Indoor and outdoor exhibits, administration, and the stunning landscape are integrated as one.
